From the remote computer, after login through ssh the answer for echo $DISPLAY is an empty line. If port 177 (UDP) or port 6000 (TCP) are blocked you need to fix this first. The project, although technically successful, has some real world challenges like the odd fact that finding programs that only use the safe subset is really hard because a lot of the Closed Display I removed the -nolisten tcp options to the X executable. ssh -X works fine.
