You're getting the "cannot execute binary file" error because the system doesn't know what to do with the file -- it's not actually a compiled binary, and there's no "shebang" (#!) When you type /bin/bash -c ls, that tells bash to run another instance of bash, and have that instance run ls. Hard to imagine how x86 binaries got installed on this BBB because I never manually installed BBB; at least not knowingly. That can't be done if the file is not a script. One other option worth exploring might be to install that in a 32bit CentOS 5.11 virtual machine.
